March 2008, The Autodistribution Group, French and European leader in the independent distribution of car and HGV parts, signed an interprofessional agreement for the reduction of stocks of used tyres in France.

On February the 20th, The Autodistribution Group, French and European leader in the independent distribution of car and HGV parts, signed an interprofessional agreement for the reduction of stocks of used tyres in France. Sixty one storage sites with no creditworthy owners have been counted within our territory. Aside from the visual pollution they create, these depots pose a risk to the environment as well as local inhabitants, in terms of fires or proliferation of snakes and mosquitos, carriers of viruses such as chikungunya. Faced with the implications and the urgency of the situation, an organisation has been created under the auspices of the French Ministry of Ecology, Planning and Sustainable Development. Uniting manufacturers, distributors and waste management professionals, the purpose of this association is to organise and finance the evacuation of these used tyre depots, over a period of between 6 to 8 years and for a volume of 80,000 tonnes (or approximately 10,000 tonnes per year). The Autodistribution Group, the only independent distribution network that is part of this project, is participating in the financial commitment for this project, of which the overall budget is nearly 7 million euros. In terms of future opportunities, these used tyres are destined to different end uses depending on the quality of the stock. The available options range from coincineration to cement making, to use for sports fields or children's playgrounds, right up to use for reservoirs or even reuse. According to the French Ministry of Ecology, Planning and Sustainable Development, the tonnage to be evacuated on the 61 sites will approach 60,000 tonnes. With the maximum intervention threshold of the organisation set at 80,000 tonnes, it is conceivable that all the used tyre depots will be removed within 6 years. The removal of the first stocks will begin next autumn. For the Autodistribution Group, commitment to this concrete action is part of the continuance of a voluntary environmental policy, that has been undertaken for many years, particularly with a policy of collection and traceability of the waste generated by the operation of its repair networks. The Autodistribution Group in summary The Autodistribution Group is the French and European leader in the independent distribution of car and heavy goods vehicle parts.
